OUTDOOR FIRST AID (16 HOURS)

The 2 day (16 HOUR) Outdoor First Aid course has a strong emphasis on practical work and real life scenarios in the outdoor environment.

This is an excellent course for those taking outdoor qualifications such as ML, SPA, MIA and MIC as well as IRATA, BOF, BCU and RYA. It is also popular with those undertaking Duke of Edinburgh responsibilities as well as those who mountain bike, paraglide, horse ride or simply walk or play in the outdoors and wish to be more prepared should an incident occur.

COURSE DETAILS

2 DAY COURSE

The 2 days have a strong emphasis on practical work and real life scenarios in the outdoor environment.

The centre opens at 8.30am for coffee and the course starts at 9am. The course will finish on both days at 6pm.

  • Principles and guidelines for the first aider

  • Vital signs – taking, recording and monitoring

  • Dealing with the unconscious casualty

  • Summoning help in the outdoors and completing a Casualty Report Form

  • Common medical emergencies: diabetes, seizures (epilepsy) asthma, anaphylaxis

  • Choking

  • Cardiac problems: heart attack and angina

  • Basic Life Support: CPR and AED (including drowning)

  • Life threatening bleeding and shock

DAY 1

  • Environmental problems: heat and cold injuries and conditions

  • Managing your casualty in the outdoors

  • Care of burns in the remote setting

  • Poisons

  • Care of wounds in the remote setting

  • Head injuries

  • Fractures including spinal injuries

  • Dislocations

  • Soft tissue injuries

  • Final scenarios
